The redneck rube from the Blu Collar Comedy Tour franchise plays a character much like himself in this feature, which balances Larry the Cable Guy’s occasional excesses in toilet humor with strong comic performances from the supporting cast. Larry plays a dedicated health inspector who gets in over his head when the city mayor (Joe Pantoliano) personally appoints him to investigate a rash of food poisonings at five-star restaurants. Larry’s ignorance of anything cultural that doesn’t involve his truck or MoonPies proves a handicap, but his knowledge of vermin and disarmingly unabashed way of interviewing witnesses and suspects slowly gets him where he needs to go. For the most part, the movie gives the comedian plenty of room to indulge his gross-out shtick. But it helps to have some other talent on board, notably Tom Wilson as Larry’s exasperated boss, Iris Bahr as a dreary new partner Larry thinks is a man, David Koechner as a halfwit friend, Joanna Cassidy as a restaurant owner, and Megyn Price as Larry’s shy but headstrong girlfriend. –Tom Keogh

It’s no wonder Caught Up only garnered haphazard theatrical release in 1998. Director Darin Scott, who is credited with screenplay nods for Tales from the Hood and Sprung, tosses everything–including the kitchen sink–into this noir rip-off that borrows liberally from Chinatown and Bound but lacks the intelligent gravity and grace of the former and the stylish, tongu-in-cheek fun of the latter. Starring Bokeem Woodbine as Darryl, an ex-con who wants to go straight but who keeps finding himself in unlucky circumstances, Caught Up has laughable dialogu and terrible bug-eyed over-emoting that tries to pass for acting and wastes the laconic beauty of One False Move costar Cynda Williams, who plays a femme fatale named Vanessa Dietrich (honest!). Vanessa wraps Darryl around her little finger and embroils him in a voodoo-esqu drug plot that will have the viewer rolling on the floor in disbelief. Had Caught Up played its convoluted plot for laughs, it may have at least been a camp parody on the genre, but as it is, it doesn’t avoid a single cinematic cliche. The DVD comes with a slew of music videos, the radio and TV spot, as well as a director’s commentary track. But don’t be fooled by all the goodies–they’re simply a smokescreen to nudge the audience into thinking the film is important and worthy. Caught Up is a goofy mess of contradictions and implausibility. –Paula Nechak

Two disparate media make felicitous bedfellows in A Bloody Show, a performance by singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding and various collaborators: Misfortune, his critically-acclaimed 2005 novel (written under his real name, Wesley Stace; Stace’s nom de musiqu, was taken from a recording of that name by Bob Dylan, who himself copped it from 19th Century American gunfighter John Wesley Hardin); and Songs of Misfortune, a selection of tunes mentioned in the book and recorded that same year by Harding and his a cappella quartet, the Love Hall Tryst. This straightforward, simply-staged Seattle gig, organized in barely a week and included in that city’s annual Bumbershoot festival, features readings from the book, principally by Harding and fellow Brit muso Robyn Hitchcock, interspersed with songs from the album performed by the Tryst and a Harding-led rock band known as the Minstrel in the Galleries, with occasional accompaniment by a string quartet. The music comes mostly from traditional British sources, and thus is filled with tales of murder, adultery, and other eternal sins, a fact that the author-musician acknowledges with droll understatement (”We’re going to be entering the infanticide portion of the set fairly shortly,” he wryly warns the family crowd). Those songs and Leonard Cohen’s “Joan of Arc” are masterfully rendered by the singers, bolstered by the use of acoustic guitars, mandolin, and hurdy-gurdy; the rock band, meanwhile, bears a passing resemblance to folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention even while falling well short of that lofty standard. It’s quite an undertaking; while Harding submits that “We didn’t screw up too bad,” A Bloody Show is actually a rousing success. An extra CD’s worth of Harding’s demos for the Misfortune material is included with the first 5000 copies. –Sam Graham
